Please join Mychal’s Learning Place on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 6:30pm for our next seminar. Sandy Olinger, Transition Teacher/Job Developer from the District Office of Transition Services at LAUSD will be with us. Sandy has been with LAUSD since 1985, serving as a special education teacher, a special education coordinator and a transition teacher. She will discuss the importance of K-12 transition planning and how parents can support their child throughout the process. Learn how effective transition planning can result in meaningful activities and successful postsecondary outcomes. DOTS coordinates the planning and delivery of transition services for all students with disabilities, to prepare them for transitions including the transition from school to adult living.

Please join Mychal’s Learning Place on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at 6:30pm for our next seminar. Josh Passman, Self-Help Clinic Coordinator at Bet Tzedek Legal Services will be discussing why parents/loved ones of people with developmental disabilities may want to get a CONSERVATORSHIP for their children after they turn 18. Josh is an attorney with Bet Tzedek and has been running the Self-Help Conservatorship Clinic in Norwalk and Pasadena since July 2010. He will provide general information about CONSERVATORSHIPS and information about how to utilize the self-help clinic. If you or someone you know needs assistance with conservatorship filings or understanding alternatives, this seminar will be extremely helpful.

The goal is to raise awareness about resources, rights to services, help with self-empowerment and asserting the rights for those in the community with a disability. Down syndrome 101: Mychal’s Learning Place is excited for our next seminar that will take place in our new Hawthorne building on Thursday, November 17th at 6:30pm. What is Down syndrome? How does it affect the human body? What’s on the horizon for people with Down syndrome through research? What kinds of services are available for people with Down syndrome and their families? Come and hear what the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles has to say from Director Gail Williamson, who is also the mother of a 32 year old son with Down syndrome. Epilepsy 101: Mychal’s Learning Place is excited for our next seminar that will take place in our new Hawthorne building on Thursday, October 20th at 6:30pm. A representative from The Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Los Angeles will be here. The purpose is to educate about seizure recognition, seizure first aid and a basic understanding of epilepsy. We think it’s very important for families to be advocates, so if you or someone you know has epilepsy, this seminar will help answer any questions you may have. On Monday, June 20, 2011, Mychal’s Learning Place opened it’s doors to the new building located at 4901 W. Rosecrans Ave. in Hawthorne. It’s taken over a year of planning and hard work along with some extremely generous community members to make this dream a reality. It would not have happened without the support of so many people and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts!
