She also trains at Mychal’s Bakery, where she prepares chocolate chip cookies, sprinkle cookies, and granola. Through this work, she’s building skills in food preparation, following routines, and working within a team environment. These are the kinds of experiences that translate directly into real job opportunities- giving individuals the tools and confidence to step into the workforce and succeed.
What makes Karina stand out is how naturally she applies these skills in her everyday life. At home, she’s constantly in motion- doing laundry, vacuuming, and helping keep things organized. As her mom, Maria, shares, “She doesn’t sit still. She’s always finding ways to help out around the house.” She adds, “Karina was always like this- but since training with Mychal’s, she’s even MORE helpful! She has all of these skills and she wants to use them as often as possible.” Karina sums it up best herself: “I am a hard worker who is very dependable.”

Karina also brings creativity and personality into everything she does. She loves drawing butterflies, singing karaoke with friends, and learning about camouflage insects because “they’re very silly.” And she has a clear goal for her future: working as a clown at a children’s hospital. “I like to make kids laugh,” she says- and she’s already practicing, outfit and all. It’s a reminder that meaningful employment isn’t one-size-fits-all- it’s about building skills and then applying them in ways that align with each individual’s interests and strengths.
Autism Awareness Month is a meaningful time to share stories like Karina’s- but at Mychal’s, this work happens every day. It’s not just about awareness, it’s about action- providing training, building independence, and creating real pathways to employment. Karina puts it simply: “Mychal’s makes me feel happy, excited and proud to be here, and I learn a lot here.” And that’s the goal- to create an environment where individuals are supported, capable, and ready to take their skills out into the world.
