When Luis joined Mychal’s job training program, his determination was undeniable. In 2024, he was partnered with Grocery Outlet Lomita to begin an internship that would give him hands-on experience and a real taste of the working world. In the beginning, a Mychal’s staff member joined him on-site to provide support and help him learn the ropes, one task at a time. Luis dove right in, mastering inventory management, sharpening his focus, and building strong communication skills with his coworkers. Before long, he was stocking shelves, breaking down boxes, and keeping the aisles organized like a total pro.
After putting in the time learning and training, his hard work paid off – Grocery Outlet Lomita offered Luis an official employee position last fall! For anyone who knows him, this comes as no surprise. His enthusiasm and sense of pride in his work are infectious.

Luis’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when potential meets opportunity. In a world where 85% of adults with developmental disabilities remain unemployed, stories like his matter deeply. They show what can happen when businesses like Grocery Outlet Lomita say yes – yes to inclusion, yes to partnership, and yes to changing lives through meaningful work.
With every shift he works and every skill he strengthens, Luis isn’t just earning a paycheck – he’s creating a pathway to greater independence and confidence. And thanks to partnerships like this, we’re not just preparing students for jobs; together, we’re paving a path to more independence for the incredible young adults we serve.
